In an interview with The New York Times (which Trump called failing), the President said that he would not have given Sessions the job as AG had he known that he would recuse himself from the Russia investigation.
“Jeff Sessions takes the job, gets into the job, recuses himself, which frankly I think is very unfair to the President”
“How do you take a job and then recuse yourself? If he would have recused himself before the job, I would have said, ‘Thanks, Jeff, but I’m not going to take you.’ It’s extremely unfair — and that’s a mild word — to the President.”
Yes, that was the President of the United States speaking about the first Senator to endorse him during the 2016 campaign, and speaking about his own attorney general. (You are not mistaken – he did refer to himself in third person)
Now, the other side of the aisle has a vast array of problems with Jeff Sessions for various reasons, mostly due to his anti-minority stances, and his rollback of Obama-era reforms. Make no mistake, this man is awful for the country, however Trump criticized the one thing which he has been widely praised for on both sides : recusing himself from the Russia investigation.
Sarah Sanders said the following, referring to the President and Sessions :
“clearly he [Trump] has confidence in him [Sessions] or he would not be the attorney general”
Yet again, the President and his aides have differing stories.
This in-party fighting has thrown many in the GOP into disarray, as again, Sessions has been widely praised by both sides for recusing himself from the Russia investigation. This interview is also yet another example of the President hurting his own case and perhaps another possible example of obstruction of justice.
I find it ironic that the President continues to give interviews to the media, which he deems “fake” and “failing”. I am not shocked, however, by his comments in this latest interview. If any other politician said something like this, it would end their career. But Trump keeps going and going and going. When will it stop?
